Preferred Wedding Vendor Spotlight - Cakabakery West, Custom Wedding Desserts at Holland Wedding Venues

There’s an undeniable magic in wedding desserts made from scratch - desserts that feel personal, intentional, and crafted with the same care a couple pours into their wedding celebration. For many celebrating at our Holland wedding venue, that magic often begins with Cakabakery West. This cherished Holland bakery has roots as heartfelt as its name: a young Jason Kakabaker choosing a new birthday cake flavor each year, falling in love with the kitchen, and later learning the art of cake decorating at his very first job. What started as a childhood passion grew into Cakabakery in 2010, a creative, from-scratch dessert studio now known for wedding cakes near Holland that balance imagination with timeless craftsmanship.

From their Holland and Grand Rapids locations, the Cakabakery team brings each wedding cake to life through thoughtful detail; unique flavors, meaningful design elements, and a commitment to making every dessert feel unmistakably personal. It’s why so many of our couples trust them with the sweetest part of their celebration, and why we’re thrilled to spotlight the artistry behind one of West Michigan’s most beloved bakeries.

HOw Did you get started?

Jason (the owner) baked growing up, his mom would make him a special cake every year for his birthday and he got to pick his own flavor! He loved the kitchen, and took this passion to his very first job at an ice cream shop where he learned how to decorate cakes...thus instilling in him the basics of cake decorating that led to the opening of Cakabakery (a play on Jasons last name, Kakabaker) in 2010 out of his home kitchen. In 2012, we opened our first store front in GR (the windmill building), and in 2015, purchased a location in Holland, and then opened our 2nd location in Holland in 2019 (downtown!).

HOw Do you help couples turn a wedding cake into something personal?

Our goal here at the Cakabakery is to always maintain originality, while keeping our cakes specifically designed to what our couples want. We always ask for pictures of inspiration, and discuss in detail with couples any changes they may want to make. We go over color schemes, themes, inside jokes, how they met, specific dates, flowers, even the pets they own. It's important for us to let them know that we care about their big day just as much as they do, and that desserts speak volumes.

what Cake flavor combinations surprise your COUPLES the most?

I would say our champagne cake paired with our strawberry buttercream, and our dark chocolate merlot! Those are two of the most popular flavors here at our Holland location. Our GR location's most popular is banana and peanut butter. It's really all based on the demographic...almond is a huge hit over here in Holland too!

Is there a design or style of wedding cake that feels timeless to you?

Lambyth....it was so popular back in the 80's and 90's and it's really coming back the last 2 years. Of course back then it was much more detailed and flamboyant, with multiple layers of buttercream, and tiers upon tiers of cake all stacked on pillars. While that's not the case these days, it's still such a beautiful and classic look on even a single tier cake that it really can pull the eye to the dessert table.

What Inspires you when creating something from scratch for someone’s wedding day?

Really getting to know the clients and hearing about who they are as a couple. I love watching them interact together and sitting back and hearing their thoughts and opinions. I try to give both of them a chance to speak and react when I ask questions about designs, taste of cakes, buttercreams, cookies...favorite desserts of their own etc...ask them both if they have any thoughts on designs. You'd be surprised that if you actually give the Groom a chance to say something, he has quite a bit to say about the design and taste of the wedding cake! Haha!

if you could design your dream wedding cake, what would it be?

Absolutely, hands down, our spackled (pallet knife) buttercream floral. Our decorator, Michelle, is one of the most gifted designers I have ever met and can really turn anything into an art piece. Her bread and butter is our floral designs on cakes. (I'll put some pictures below for everyone to see) I personally would go with flowers that would match my wedding's color scheme!

What’s your favorite part about working at The Felt Estate?

Obviously Derrick and Holden ;) But really, the history! I grew up in Holland and remember before the Felt was turned into a venue, and all the old spooky ghost stories, and before it was a disc golf course! The TRUE history of the estate is actually very beautiful and amazing, and I love being a part of that!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to couples getting married at The Felt?

Ensure you take in every part of the venue, from the carriage house, to shore acres, to the church on site, to every inch of the actual Felt Mansion! Get to know the history, explore the parts of the mansion that are accessible, take a ton of pictures, keep your wedding theme very fitted to the beautiful, natural architecture and natural setting the mansion and its grounds already have to offer. You won't be disappointed.
