Join us in December as we celebrate the holidays at the Felt Estate. This year we highlight the theme The Midwest Riviera: Life along the Lake. The 1920s brought many industrialists and resorters, like Dorr Felt, who left the big cities of Chicago and Detroit to enjoy the summer holidays in the cool breezes along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. The area from New Buffalo to Traverse City was known as the Midwest Riviera, and the influx of tourist dollars forever changed small towns like Saugatuck. See a wonderful collection of early 20th century “beach” memorabilia on loan to us from Merrill Taylor and see our beach-themed trees, complete with their own sandy shore. Many thanks to Merrill Taylor, Ken and Lorma Freestone, and to the Holland Area Arts Council for their help in making this loan possible.
EVENING GUIDED TOURS are Friday and Saturday Evenings: December 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28 from 6 – 8:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:50 p.m. $20. ($15 for students and seniors). Free passes may be used for these tours.
AFTERNOON HOLIDAY GUIDED TOURS are also available Sunday afternoons (beginning December 8) and on New Year’s Day, from 2-4 p.m. No reservations or tickets needed. Guided tours are $20 for adults; $15 for students and seniors; children 12 and under are free. Free Passes (such as those given at the concert series) ARE eligible for these tours. Our guided tours are from 2:00-4:00 p.m. We have one guided tour per afternoon that begins at 2:05 p.m. and last roughly 1-1.5 hours. You will see the mansion and hear stories of the restoration from director, Patty Meyer. Patty and a group of volunteers began the restoration in 2002. Hear first-hand accounts of the triumphs and trials encountered during the restoration of the Felt Estate. While children are welcome, guided tours last over an hour, and some children may experience fatigue. Parents are encouraged to do the Felt Mansion scavenger hunt with children instead of following the guided tour. Free passes may be used for these tours.
